The Irish Post, the UK newspaper claiming to be the voice of the Irish in the UK, in its Supplement, Ri-Ra (Gaelic), under the heading ‘Nine novels set to make an IMPAC on 2013, reports on The Dulang Washer as follows:

“It may not sound the likeliest background for an Irish novelist to set his tale, but Dubliner Paul Callan – who divides his time between Malaysia and London – is steeped in the history and culture of the Malay Peninsula. Accordingly his story welds and weaves historical fiction and Malay culture to basic human emotions. The result is a gothic novel of love, ambition and adventure . . . Paul Callan’s characterization . . . are interwoven into the plot that moves inexorably towards its conclusion . . .”
